356 New Orleans: Lil McKH Jewelry - An Interview with Lil McKinnon-Hicks (By Leslie Heindel - 365 NEW ORLEANS, Algiers Point, New Orleans, Louisiana, 2018)

Algiers Point resident and jewelry maker, Lil McKinnon-Hicks, loves what she does and it shines through in her bubbly personality. Her private studio is in an old, corner grocery store. With tons of light from the picture windows, she toils away creating one of a kind pieces for her loyal clientele. My favorite part of meeting Lil was her parting words, “Don’t leave all that old jewelry tucked away. If it’s broken, take it out, and let’s make it special.”

1. What products and services do you offer?

Both retail and custom jewelry. However, I primarily make custom pieces. People ask for all kinds of things. You can bring something as a starting place or just let me create something for you!

2. How long have you been in business?

Over 15 years! I have been in New Orleans for 4 years.

3. How do people find you online?

My website, Facebook, or Instagram: @lilmckh

4. What is lesser known about your business that you wish more people knew?

That I create things for people, like real pieces designed for you. I can take other rings apart, take stones out of other jewelry, and the like to create new pieces with your sentimental jewelry.

5. What’s your favorite aspect or project you’ve worked on?

I met this lady at a trunk show and her husband had passed. They had purchased all these precious stones on a trip together and she had them tucked away in a lockbox. She finally pulled them out and I created jewelry for her with these beautiful precious stones. She was a very tiny woman, so I had to make them proportionate to her size too. I didn’t want it to be overwhelming.

365 New Orleans is focused on local artists and businesses. Every single day, for one year, a new person or place will be highlighted.
